Intergenerational performance installation project (IPIP)

WEAVING the SOCIAL:
MEMORY, PUBLIC SPACE and FUTURE PLACE

This project engages primary or early high school-aged children in dialogue with senior citizens through active engagement, story-telling, immersive listening, creative interpretation and interactive art installation making.

In exploring subjective experiences through creative mediums and generating new archives, this project helps to facilitate greater clarity of understanding of participants’ emotions, strengthen social bonds and deepen community belonging across generations.

For the longer term, it develops a mode of including community members who are not normally involved in the virtuosic modes of artistic creation and appreciation. It facilitates the means through which these members can build confidence, agency and emotional health through goal-oriented dialogue, emotional connection, new inter/generational friendships, negotiation and problem-solving. It extends participants’ capacities for social participation in empathetic, meaningful, imaginative and educational ways.
